Allegany Franciscan Ministries' 2007 Tau Grant Program provided $161,500 in funds to organizations in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties that implement creative programs and services to children, adults, and families in local communities. The program specifically supports work that promotes healthy behaviors and prevention from physical, mental, spiritual, societal, cultural, environmental and safety aspects.

Academy Prep Center of Tampa, Tampa, FL                              
Peers Making a Difference  $10,000      
Peers Making a Difference will develop student leaders to educate other young people in the school and community about risky behaviors, all forms of violence, and substance abuse.  The students will become skilled at value clarification, decision-making, communication skills, and conflict resolution to improve their health and quality of life.

AIDS Service Association of Pinellas, St. Petersburg, FL              
Create Your Sacred Space Retreat $5,000                
Create Your Sacred Space will serve over 140 people with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers (90% have income below the Federal Poverty Level).  The retreat theme is the integration of Body, Mind, and Spirit.  It brings a sense of belonging to persons disenfranchised due to the stigma of HIV/AIDS.  The retreat is designed to strengthen personal faith, individual self-worth, and renew personal connection to the Holy Spirit.

ALPHA,  A Beginning, St. Petersburg, FL                                             
Great Nutrition = Great Parenting $5,000               
The Great Nutrition Project provides nutritional information and cooking instruction to 110 teens, young women, and their infants each year.  Participants have limited knowledge in these areas due to poor parenting modeling, homelessness, victimization, and abuse or neglect.  Services will be provided to increase their skill and knowledge level in this area and to increase the health of mothers and children as well as to support a stronger bond between mother and child.

Benedict Haven, St. Petersburg, FL                                           
Community Activity Consumer Education Program $10,000
Community Activity Consumer Education provides services to eight profoundly mentally ill residents.  Supervised activities will be planned for residents who would otherwise not be able to financially or functionally participate.  Activities are designed to increase appropriate social interaction and physical activity. The program also involves community education about mental illness, educating the public and people connected with venues hosting the activities.

Brandon Outreach Clinic, Brandon, FL                                                 
Medication Assistance Program $10,000
Patients at the Brandon Outreach Clinic are treated for a variety of chronic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, pulmonary disease and neurological disorders.  Prescription medication is a critical part of the treatment.  The clinic has aggressively increased their work in this area to help meet this rapidly increasing need.  Funding will help administer treatment services and provide medication and supplies while collaboration is being developed to control costs and develop a Patient Assistance Program.

Camelot Community Care, Tampa, FL                                        
Youth Aging Out of Foster Care Engaging in the Their Community $9,000       
The Youth Aging Out of Foster Care program will mobilize up to 100 teens who are aging out or have recently aged out of foster care.  The program is designed to raise awareness about the wide range of health and social service needs of the population by creating advocates for system change.  Education on voting registration, legislative process and issues affecting the teens, and training on how to share personal stories will culminate in an overnight trip to Tallahassee during the Florida Legislature's 2008 Regular Session.

Community Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, FL                                          
Anytown $10,000      
Funding for Anytown will help bring up to 50 adolescents of diverse backgrounds together for a residential leadership and diversity awareness program.  Through interactive activities, participants have discussions in a safe environment about issues that divide their home, schools, and communities.  Our future leaders will address issues of discrimination as they discover the benefits of an inclusive society.

Faith in Action of Upper Pinellas, Dunedin, FL                                     
Strong for Life Site Expansion Project $10,000
Strong for Life is designed to provide resistance exercise programs for older adults to support the physical requirements of day-to-day activities and help maintain maximum levels of independence through improved health.  Funding will be utilized to support 20 sites serving economically poor elderly who do not have access to such services.  Sites include mobile home parks and community centers that are more easily accessible to the target population.

Franciscan Center, Tampa, FL                                                             
Strategic Planning Day $5,000     
The Franciscan Center is embarking on a strategic planning process for the next three years and beyond to prepare for achieving diversified and self-sustaining funding sources.  An estimated 25 stakeholders will participate in an independently and professionally facilitated full-day retreat at the Collaborative Labs in Pinellas County.

Girls Incorporated of Pinellas, Pinellas Park, FL                                   
Compassionate Kids Club $10,000
The Compassionate Kids Club is a curriculum-based program that will provide specific tools for conflict resolution and empathy development for both young girls and staff, utilizing the Nonviolent Communication Model.  The approach teaches compassion as a basis of response and action rather than fear, guilt, shame, blame, coercion, or threats for girls facing social and economic challenges.

Hispanic Services Council, Tampa, FL                                                 
Empowering Youth & Family through Cultural Interventions $10,000     
Hispanic Services Council is the only bilingual/bicultural information and referral service that exclusively serves limited English speaking Latinos in Hillsborough County.  Funding will provide Licensed Mental Health counseling services for families and their children who feel safe and understood at the Hispanic Services Council.

Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County, Tampa, FL                       
Promoting Access and Resources for Homeless and Near Homeless $10,000   
The Promoting Access project will conduct seven community education and awareness events to bring together service providers, those utilizing services, and community leaders to discuss and promote system change to improve healthcare access and linkages to needed supports and services.  The information will be utilized to improve and work toward "Places for People," the Homeless Coalition's 10-year plan to end homelessness in Hillsborough County.

La Clinica Guadalupana, Clearwater, FL                                              
Natural Family Planning Project $5,000         
The NFP project will provide Creighton Natural Family Planning for all clients and families of childbearing age that is language and culturally sensitive.  Ninety-five percent of clients are Hispanic, primarily Mexican.  Funds will be utilized to provide an average of 6 couples per month with bilingual instruction and supporting supplies.

Life Center of the Suncoast, Tampa, FL                                              
Children's Bereavement Awareness and Intervention Project $10,000     
The Children’s Bereavement project provides 3 specially trained licensed mental health counselors to determine how best to support families with children dealing with traumatic loss such as the killing of a loved one by violence.  Workshop models will be tailored to help children developmentally cope with specific trauma stressors associated with grief, fear, and behavioral health related issues.

Life Enrichment Center, Tampa, Florida                                              
Active Seniors $10,000      
The Active Seniors program provides low-income seniors access to classes and other fee-based services offered by the Center.  The primary objectives are to help seniors maintain their independence and remain active and productive members of their community.  Classes and programs dealing with exercise, health and wellness, nutrition, mental health, creative writing, computers, memoir writing, and personal safety are offered on a regular basis.

Nativity Catholic Church, Brandon, FL                                                 
Food Pantry & Food Bank $10,000        
The program supports a satellite system of small food pantries, churches, and community centers in rural Hillsborough County.  Funding will be used to help provide basic food, personal hygiene items, and basic first aid/medial supplies so the poor and hungry can be serviced, with dignity, in their neighborhood through programs appropriate to their needs.  As a centralized resource, purchases of scale and large donations will be able to be obtained and distributed in close collaboration with rural providers.

Religious Community Services, Clearwater, FL                                    
Rainbow Recovery $3,000
The Rainbow Recovery program enables families in financial need to receive health services for their sick children.  Funds will assist with fees related to the Morton Plant Women's Center where children who cannot attend school or child care due to illness can stay for up to twelve hours in a safe environment.  This allows the parent(s) to resume work and maintain stable employment where sick time is not allowed or economically feasible.

St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, Tampa, FL                                       
Why Weight? A Weight Management Program for Children $9,500       
Why Weight? serves families interested in learning how to develop lifelong skills and habits to reverse or prevent obesity for children ages 8-15 years old.  Funding will support the participation of up to 30 families who would otherwise not be able to afford the program, and to educate health care professionals about Why Weight? services and conduct training for community service organization staff.

Voices for Children of Hillsborough County, Tampa, FL              
Teen Team Awareness Program $10,000         
Funding will be used to recruit volunteer guardians for the Teen Team.  The Teen Team works specifically with foster children who are 13 years of age and older, a population that is underserved by the foster care system.  Volunteer guardians will work with teens to help them advocate for services, provide guidance, and information about available services as resources related to physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health and well-being.
