Miami-Dade Region 2007 Tau Grants
 

Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ 2007 Tau Grant Program awarded a total of $28,000 to organizations striving to make a positive social change in our community through health education and health promotion efforts. The program specifically supports work that promotes healthy behaviors and prevention arising out of physical, mental, spiritual, societal, cultural, and environmental issues.

Community Coalition for a Living Wage, Miami, FL                                                
New Nonprofit Initiative & the Greater Miami Living Wage Project    $4,000   
To support a new innovative program that will specifically target employees of private nonprofit charitable organization in Miami-Dade County. Many of the positions within this employment sector have traditionally paid employees significantly lower salaries in comparison to their for profit counterparts.

Hands On Miami, Miami, FL
Community Service Summer Camp  $4,000
To bring together middle- and high-school students from Miami-Dade County for a week-long session of meaningful volunteer service projects and provide opportunities for youth to explore critical issues in the community.  A total of 200 students will participate in service projects such as feeding the homeless, reading to children, or cleaning up a park. 

Humane Society of Greater Miami, Miami, FL                                           
Visiting Pet Partners  $4,000
To expand the pet therapy program to include developmentally-challenged children.  Humane Society volunteers and their pets spend time brightening the lives of residents and patients at rehabilitation centers and senior citizen centers across Miami-Dade.  The expanded program will be offered once a week to 10 organizations that serve developmentally-challenged children.

Neat Stuff, Miami, FL                                                                       
Dress for Success!   $4,000 
To provide one week's worth of school uniforms (including socks, and underwear) to an additional 400 at-risk children in Miami-Dade County.  This program will help avoid possible suspension at those schools where uniforms are required.    

South Florida Interfaith Worker Justice, Miami, FL                                   
A Prophetic Voice for Organizing Workers  $4,000
To support service workers who are risking their economic stability for the greater good.  The service sector tends to perpetuate poverty by only compensating working people with a minimum wage and avoiding the cost of providing healthcare.  The project advocates for, empowers, and helps to organize workers in their struggle for improved working conditions, fair wages, and access to healthcare.

South Florida Urban Ministries, Miami, FL                                     
Community Health Initiatives Branches Fitness & Nutrition Project   $4,000    
To develop and pilot a nutrition and fitness program for participants in children and youth ministries programs and their caregivers. This program will focus on developing healthy eating and nutrition habits, and integrating physical activities in daily life.

The Children's Village, Miami, FL                                                                
Daddy & Me  $4,000
To add a Daddy & Me component to the Mommy & Me program for at-risk families in Carol City consisting of three (3) age-appropriate parent/child classes.  The population to be served will be children under 4 years of age and their fathers.  Topics to be presented include: healthy eating; safety (CPR, poison prevention); discipline; anger management; and “ask a physician.”
